Effortlessly calculate your General Weighted Average (GWA) with the NU GWA Calculator! Designed for National University students, this tool helps you keep track of your academic performance with just a few clicks.
What is GWA?
GWA stands for General Weighted Average. It’s a number that reflects your overall academic performance in college, based on your grades and the number of units each subject carries.
In the Philippines, a lower GWA means better performance—a GWA of 1.00 is excellent, while 5.00 means failing.
Colleges and universities like NU use GWA to determine:
- Academic standing and retention
- Eligibility for scholarships and honors (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude)
- Graduation requirements
How to compute GWA in college
The GWA is found by taking the weighted average of all your subjects. That means you multiply each grade by its corresponding units, add up all those results, and then divide by the total number of units.
The formula for GWA is:

Where:
- gig_igi = grade for subject iii
- uiu_iui = number of units for subject iii
- nnn = total number of subjects
Step-by-step:
- List all your subjects with their grades and units.
- Multiply each grade by its units.
- Add up the results.
- Divide the total by the sum of the units.
Example of how to compute general weighted average in college
Let’s say you took these subjects:
Subject | Grade | Units |
---|---|---|
Algebra | 1.25 | 3 |
Biology | 1.75 | 4 |
English | 2.00 | 3 |
Step 1: Multiply each grade by its units
- Algebra: 1.25 × 3 = 3.75
- Biology: 1.75 × 4 = 7.00
- English: 2.00 × 3 = 6.00
Step 2: Add all these results
3.75 + 7.00 + 6.00 = 16.75
Step 3: Add all the units
3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Step 4: Divide the total weighted grades by total units
GWA = 16.75 ÷ 10 = 1.675
So, your GWA is 1.68 (rounded off).
